GM of the Ravens Eric DeCosta talks about Justin Madubuike’s contract status.
NEW DELHI: During a news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, general manager of the Baltimore Ravens Eric DeCosta shared details about the team’s plans for defensive lineman Justin Madubuike’s contract discussions.
DeCosta mentioned Madubuike’s outstanding play that earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl in 2023 and the team’s efforts to negotiate a long-term contract with him.
Madubuike was a key player in the 2023 campaign, starting all 17 games and racking up noteworthy stats including 56 tackles, 33 quarterback hits, and 13 sacks.
DeCosta did admit that if a long-term deal isn’t negotiated, the franchise tag might be used, given the impending March 5 deadline for contract extensions. The defensive tackle, who was first selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, will be eligible to sign a free agency contract this offseason after serving out his four-year, $4.85 million rookie agreement.
DeCosta highlighted Madubuike’s importance to the group and voiced optimism for a successful long-term settlement. Madubuike would make $22.1 million in 2024 if the franchise tag is used.
With 47 starts in 59 games, the 26-year-old defensive tackle has amassed 153 tackles and 21.5 sacks over the course of an outstanding career. The Ravens’ defensive starting lineup for the next season will be greatly impacted by the outcome of the contract negotiations.
