Cheers to Cheevers: Linus Ullmark pays tribute to legendary Bruins goaltender with celebratory mask

During their game against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, Linus Ullmark will honor a former Boston Bruins goalie.

In honor of the Bruins’ two-time Stanley Cup winning backstop, Gerry Cheevers, Ullmark will don a mask on a night when the team honors the “Big Bad Bruins.”

Similar to how Cheever’s mask looked during the Bruins’ glory days, Ullmark’s white mask has black stitches carved into it.

Every time a stray puck struck Cheevers in the face, he would sew a fresh tear in his mask.Ullmark’s mask features the names of several iconic Big Bag Bruins, including Terry O’Reilly, Bobby Orr, Johnny Bucyk, Phil Esposito, and Cheevers, in addition to the stitches.

Jeremy Swayman will start, meaning that Ullmark’s young guys will be restricted to the bench for the second time this season. On the night when he unveiled his unique “Early Years” mask—a nod to former Bruins like Eddie Shore, Willie O’Ree, and Tiny Thompson—Cheevers was also the backup goalie.

To raise money for the Bruins Foundation, every mask that Ullmark dons during their era evenings will be put up for sale.

At 7:00 p.m., the Bruins and Canadiens will face off.
