A bicycle manufacturer that gained recognition for enhancing the design of kids’ bikes is going to stop making them.
Isla Rowntree, a three-time British cyclo-cross champion, founded Islabikes in 2005.
According to the Shropshire company, following a “tough and turbulent period for the cycle industry,” Ms. Rowntree and managing director Tim Goodall made the decision to close.
It has stated that it will make spare parts available and keep selling the current inventory for the time being.
The company was founded 25 miles away, near Claverley, and is now headquartered close to Ludlow.

Ian Evans, the deputy chairman of the Ludlow Chamber of Commerce, said on BBC Radio Shropshire that the company was responsible for putting the town on the map. “They didn’t have a retail outlet in the town centre, but it’s the presence of a brand like that,” he stated. “Then there’s the loss of jobs, which in the current climate is beyond sad.”
Dave Mellor, the former director of British Cycling, expressed his shock at the news. “Right now, the entire industry is a bit of a mess. Many people are in trouble,” he remarked.
