According to Dean Jones of Cat Crave, Auburn football legend Cam Newton, who abruptly announced his retirement during Super Bowl week, should sign a one-day deal with the Carolina Panthers to end his NFL career.

“The Panthers ought to take note of Newton’s remarks,” Jones began before stating, “and inquire with the cherished signal-caller about his willingness to formally sign a one-day contract to leave the team he helped elevate from obscurity to national prominence.” Retirement honors are the least he deserves, given all of his sacrifices and the torment he endured during a distinguished career.Did everyone expect for Newton’s career to end well? Naturally, no. That doesn’t lessen the enormous influence he had in Charlotte, both on and off the field, and on the upcoming generation of signal-callers who will follow in his footsteps.”

Now pause for a moment…

In 2021, Newton’s final season of competition, he participated in eight games for Carolina, starting five of them. Given that he officially retired as a Panther, the 2015 MVP has no practical reason for a one-day contract.

Still, it would be a noble move that might increase goodwill for a franchise that currently has very little of it.After swinging and missing on Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, Carolina went 2-15 on the season. They also gave up their 2023 first-round (No. 9) and second-round (61) picks, their 2024 first-round pick (currently No. 2), and receiver DJ Moore (their 2018 first-round pick). Panthers ownerwas last seen hurling a beer at a Jacksonville Jaguars fan during a 26-0 blowout of the Panthers at TIAA Bank Field on December 31.

Anything done in Newton’s honor would serve as a reminder to Panthers supporters of the heights the team achieved during Superman’s tenure—heights the team hasn’t even approached since he left in 2020
