Fans of the Boston Bruins were informed with regretful news about rookie center Matthew Poitras’ health. The team declared that because of shoulder surgery, he would miss the rest of the regular season.
In a statement, Boston Bruins Medical Director Peter Asnis said that the 19-year-old, who has been a major factor in the team’s success, underwent a successful open stabilization treatment on his right shoulder:
Today, February 7, Matthew Poitras had a successful open stabilization [Latarjet] treatment for his right shoulder. Dr. Thomas Holovacs carried out the procedure at Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital. Five months or so is the estimated recuperation period.
Don Sweeney, general manager, stated Poitras’ value to the team’s future and the team’s support for him:
“Matt will be missed since he has been a key contributor to our team’s success thus far. It was recommended by our medical experts that Matt have the operation instead of playing with an unstable shoulder and perhaps causing more damage.
“Everyone involved supported the decision as to do what was best for him at this time. Matt is just starting his Bruins career and is a key part of our future.” Since Poitras returned from the IIHF U-20 World Junior Championships, where Canada competed but was not successful in winning a medal, there had been worries about his health. Poitras played in six of the twelve games the Bruins played in January, but he appeared uncomfortable and had limited ice time. Following the tournament, Poitras was placed on the team’s injury report.

The 2022 second-round selection had an instant effect after joining the Bruins this season. During the first two months of the season, he scored five goals and totaled eleven points, which greatly contributed to their early-season success.
