There have apparently been talks between the Dallas Mavericks, who are 27-23 and ranked ninth in the West, and the Milwaukee Bucks, who are 33-17 and third in the East, to switch players from their front court.
The Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks have discussed a possible trade involving Grant Williams, according to NBA Insider Marc Stein’s post on his Substack, The Stein Line, as teams throughout the Association consider their alternatives.
“The Bucks and Mavericks have held exploratory discussions on a trade that would swap Milwaukee’s Bobby Portis and Dallas newcomer Grant Williams,” says Stein.
Re-signing the former Tennessee Volunteer as a restricted free agent in the summer is difficult to justify because he was frequently left out of Boston’s rotation the previous season.
When the Celtics later got the chance to acquire Jrue Holiday and went over that threshold to add a two-time All-Star who is averaging 13.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists this season, the calculation naturally shifted. In addition, he is hitting 42.3 percent of the 4.8 threes that he is hoisting and passing the ball to their defence.
Though his time in the Lone Star State may just be temporary, Williams’ first season got off to a strong start. He had scored 9.8 points per game in Dallas’ first 17 games as of December, making 43 percent of his 5.5 three-point tries.
However, the 25-year-old’s play has deteriorated significantly since then. He isn’t helping the Mavericks team much on defence, as they allow 118.5 points per game, placing them in the bottom ten in that area.
The four-year veteran has been hitting 33.3 percent on 3.9 tries from three-point range since December 1. His rating is -5.7 plus-minus and he is averaging 7.3 points. From 28.8 minutes in the first 17 games to 25.2 in the next 29, his playing time has decreased.
A Milwaukee fan favourite, Portis contributed to the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship win. He averages 12.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and three three-pointers each game, making 38 percent of them.
