The History of Defensive Coordinators for the Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins entered the NFL in 1970, making Anthony Weaver the 17th defensive coordinator in franchise history.

Anthony Weaver, the new defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, had served as the defensive line coach, run game coordinator, and assistant head coach for the Baltimore Ravens for the previous three seasons.

Despite spending just one season with the Houston Texans in 2020, he has defensive coordinator expertise.

Although every coach is different and it’s impossible to predict with certainty what kind of defensive coordinator Weaver will end up being for the Dolphins, we thought it would be interesting to take a look back at every DC the franchise has hired since entering the NFL in 1970.

Outcomes: In Boyer’s first season, the Dolphins were 30th in total defence, moving up to 20th before finishing 15th and 18th. In terms of points allowed, the Dolphins improved from 32nd in 2019 to sixth in 2020.

2019 — Patrick Graham
Prior experience as an NFL defensive coordinator or head coach was nonexistent when he joined the Dolphins in 2019 after working as the Green Bay Packers’ linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

Results: During Graham’s single season, the Dolphins saw a significant overhaul as they moved from 29th in total defence to 30th.

Matt Burke, 2017–18
Prior resume: No prior experience as an NFL defensive coordinator or head coach; was elevated from linebackers coach.
