Mario-Cristobal

Miami Hurricanes football head coach Mario Cristobal disagreed with the team’s decision to kneel the ball in their final offensive play during a game against Georgia Tech on October 7, 2023. The Hurricanes were leading 20-17 with only 33 seconds remaining, and many expected Miami to simply run out the clock by kneeling. However, Cristobal allowed running back Don Chaney Jr. to attempt a run instead, which resulted in a fumble. Georgia Tech recovered the ball and scored a touchdown on the very next play, securing a shocking 23-20 victory.

After the game, Cristobal expressed his frustration with the decision, which was made by the offensive staff. While it is often standard practice to kneel in such a situation to avoid unnecessary risks, the decision to run the ball was made with the idea of securing a first down to definitively end the game. Unfortunately, the execution failed, and the turnover allowed Georgia Tech to capitalize.

Cristobal, who was known for being a strong and disciplined coach, emphasized that the mistake was a coaching error, taking responsibility for the loss. He emphasized that the responsibility for the outcome rested on his shoulders, as the final decision fell under his authority. This rare misstep was seen as a teaching moment for Cristobal and the Hurricanes, who would go on to learn from the experience, vowing to never make such a costly mistake again.

The incident sparked widespread debate over coaching strategy and risk management, with many questioning whether Miami’s decision-making was overly aggressive given the circumstances.
