William Mote has started at long snapper for Georgia the previous four seasons. Now he’s off to pursue his NFL aspirations.
Consider a huge Georgia game from the past few years. In the College Football Playoff semifinals, Ohio State faces Tennessee in the rain, while Ole Miss plays at home. There are plenty to choose from. Now consider the players who won those games. You’ll probably think of Stetson Bennetts and Kelee Ringos, Jalen Carters, and Sedrick Van Prans.
There was another guy on those squads whose function was as important. Someone who preferred not to have his name in the spotlight because it implied he wasn’t performing his job. We’re talking about Georgia long snapper William Mote, who played the position about which football coaches wax poetic.
Mote has been Georgia’s long snapper on all punts since 2020, and he will take over field goal snapping responsibilities in 2022. Now, after two national championships and a lot of winning, he’s off to Mobile for the Reese’s Senior Bowl. Before that, he spoke with Dawgs Daily about his time in Athens, particularly his role as a starter on the squad that won the school’s first championship in 41 years.
“A lot of guys decided to come back, a lot of really talented guys, and we really got to work like the work ethic was there,” Mote said. “Many of those players came in, like in 2019. You wanted to work with guys like Quay Walker, who I believe came in the year before me, Jordan Davis, and Devonte [Wyatt], who came in every day and worked. NIL was introduced in the summer of 2021, hence it was also a novel concept. And as a team, we kind of agreed that, look, we don’t really care; COVID is over, and this NIL stuff isn’t going to earn you money. If we
