PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers will hire an external offensive coordinator candidate, and whoever he is will have experience as an NFL playmaker and detailed experience in quarterback development.

One option that has been floated over the past couple of years is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

The former Steelers quarterback won the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay and has been considering a return to the coaching ranks since his firing.

But a Pittsburgh insider says he could be out of the running to become the Steelers’ next OC.Speaking to the group on 93.7 The Fan, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic said Leftwich will not be the Steelers’ next offensive coordinator.

“It won’t be Leftwich,” Kaboly said. “I could tell you who it won’t be more than it will be.

”Coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers’ next offensive coordinator will have to have experience working with a quarterback and be able to utilize the talent Pittsburgh already has at its disposal.“I want us to be versatile and dynamic,” Tomlin said.

“It’s clear that we need to score more points. We need to keep the defense unbalanced.

I want to use all the talents we have. Kaboly said team president Art Rooney II will play a big role in the hiring process and expects the team will begin talking to candidates in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl .

“I definitely think Art will have a big say, so they’ll go to the Senior Bowl here in a week and a half, and Art is usually there for a day or two as well.

That’s me: “They’ll definitely talk to few people there,” Kaboly said.Be sure to bookmark All Steelers for the latest news, exclusive interviews, movie recaps and more!
