On Monday, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants 33-25 on the road, putting an end to their losing streak. Even if the victory ended their three-game losing streak, the defending NFC champions still have a lot of problems, especially with ball security and discipline, as shown by an unflattering fact about the victory that OptaSTATS uncovered.

The Eagles have never before allowed a pick-six of 65 yards or more, given up four fumbles or more, nine penalties, or a 65-yard touchdown pass in one game. They prevailed 33–25 in the end.

The Eagles had two turnovers in the Giants game but they could have easily accrued more.

Boston Scott, Britain Covey, Kenneth Gainwell, and Hurts each had a fumble, with Scott losing the ball.

Jalen Hurts also threw an interception while finishing with 301 passing yards and a touchdown on 24/38 completions. Fortunately for Hurts and the Eagles, Adoree Jackson’s pick-six did not ultimately haunt them.

Jackson’s touchdown off of his interception of Jalen Hurts late in the third quarter cut the Eagles’ lead from 10 to just two.

Turnovers have been an ongoing issue for the Eagles in the 2023 NFL regular season. After 16 weeks of football, they are just 22nd in the NFL with 1.5 giveaways per contest. That’s a big reason behind their negative turnover margin (-0.5) per contest this season.

Additionally, Philadelphia was called for nine penalties against the Giants’ three.

Although the Eagles are a talented club, they cannot succeed on talent alone. Self-inflicted mistakes may put Philadelphia in a difficult predicament they shouldn’t have been in in the first place, as was highlighted in the Giants game.

In addition, Philadelphia received nine calls for penalties compared to the Giants’ three.

The Eagles are a talented team, but talent is not enough to win games. As was evident in the Giants game, self-inflicted errors might land Philadelphia in a challenging situation they shouldn’t have been in in the first place.
