Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni—with the help of general manager Howie Roseman—has “reached out” to candidates who could potentially join his staff in 2024, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
According to Russini, this does not mean that he will return 100% as coach in 2024, after a disastrous end to his third season in charge.
But at least he has the chance to plead his case.
On the defensive side of the ball, Sean Desai still holds the title of defensive coordinator, but he was stripped of his play-calling duties on that side of the ball in mid-December, a panic move that seemed to come with someone’s influence . . above Sirianni.
Desai’s defense was not good. Matt Patricia’s defense was an absolute disaster.
Presumably the Eagles will have a new defensive coordinator in 2024, one way or another. Offensively, the picture is a little less clear.
On the one hand, Brian Johnson ran an uncreative offense that relied too much on screens and quarterback draws.
On the other hand, he apparently did a good job coaching quarterbacks the previous two seasons and helping develop Jalen Hurts, and it’s unclear exactly how much autonomy he had while working with Sirianni.
But while he has received a few requests for coaching interviews this cycle, it’s hard to imagine Sirianni can convince Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to give him a fourth season if his plan is to rerun it with Johnson as offensive coordinator.
And while we’re sure Johnson will end up on land somewhere soon, he’ll also likely be thrown into the sea in the next few days. Sirianni obviously has an offensive background.
But he hasn’t played in three years as an offensive coordinator under coach Frank Reich with the Indianapolis Colts, and he struggled to do so for the Eagles in early 2021 before handing the job over to Shane Steichen.
It’s possible that if Sirianni enters a do-or-die season in 2024, he will look to become the offensive play-caller.
But he has to make it to 2024, and the best way to do that is to hire a promising offensive player as a coordinator.
Here are five candidates who could potentially be the Eagles’ next offensive coordinator, assuming Sirianni returns as coach. Frank Reich:
Former coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina PanthersThis would be the most obvious choice.
Reich was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 and helped the organization win its first Super Bowl title before becoming the Colts’ coach in 2018.
Sirianni worked under Reich with the then-San Diego Chargers and as offensive coordinator in Indianapolis.
