Devin Butler, a cornerback for Notre Dame, was taken into custody early on 20th August, 2018, close to a pub in South Bend, Indiana, on two felony counts of resisting and violence against police officials.
Butler’s arrest was originally reported by the Notre Dame student publication, The Observer, on August 21. Matt Fortuna of ESPN.com corroborated the information. Butler’s indefinite suspension was announced by Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly on Sunday in response to the incident.
Based on WSBT, Butler entered a not guilty plea on Wednesday.
Butler’s fiancée, Haleigh Bailey, defended the cornerback in a message on Thursday, according to Mike Vorel of the South Bend Tribune:
As Fortuna noted, Butler was “arrested at 1631 South Bend Ave., which is the address of the Linebacker Lounge, a popular bar right off Notre Dame’s campus.” South Bend police confirmed this.
Butler is entering his senior season at Notre Dame. The Washington, D.C., native has played in 37 games for the Fighting Irish over the past three seasons, though he was not anticipated to be ready for the start of this season on Sept. 4 against Texas.
Butler may not return to work until October following surgery in June to fix a broken left foot.
