24-year-old Rwandan goalkeeper, 26-year-old left-back Bongani Sam and now talented 22-year-old central defender Rushwin Dortley are all brand new Glamour Boys. Nasreddine Nabi is committed to entertaining, free-flowing football so it’s interesting that the club’s only recruits so far have been additions to the back five. They say that title challenges are built on rock-solid defences, and perhaps that’s the thinking here. Perhaps it’s a bit premature to think Chiefs can enter into the title race but it makes sense to make them a better defensive unit first and then build from there. If they keep clean sheets more regularly, the attackers will feel more liberated to express themselves in the final third. Regular central pairing Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe have the potential to be the best combination in the league.
FAR Rabat boss Nasreddine Nabi has reiterated his desire to ‘put on a good show’ for the supporters. He shared the secret to his FAR Rabat side’s productivity in front of goal last season where they found the net 65 times in 30 league encounters, 13 more than eventual champions Raja. This revelation will be particularly pleasing for Kaizer Chiefs fans, who always demand entertaining, attack-minded football. The Glamour Boys scored dismal 25 times in 30 DStv Prem matches in 2023-2024. The contrast is stark.
At his previous post with Young Africans in Tanzania, Nabi secured back-to-back trebles. Last season, his FAR Rabat side lost out on the Botola Pro 1 League title to Josef Zinnbauer’s Raja Casablanca. He’d love to make up for that disappointment by making a strong start to his Chiefs tenure. Amakhosi face Young Africans, ironically, in pre-season friendly action in the Toyota Cup on 28th July.
