The Seattle Seahawks stunned the NFL world on Wednesday by announcing that Pete Carroll would step aside after coaching the team for 14 years and instead take on an advisory role.
Carroll was the oldest coach in the NFL at age 72, and leaving his post in Seattle would lead many to believe he was done coaching.
Not everyone, however, is convinced to give up their headphones permanently. In an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero suggested Carroll could coach again if the opportunity arose.
«If the right job is available. In a place where he wants to be. With a team that he thinks now has a chance to win,” Pelissero said.
“I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw Pete Carroll on the NFL sideline again.
“Pelissero’s suggestion somewhat contradicts Carroll’s previous comments. While the former Super Bowl champion didn’t completely rule out the possibility of returning to coaching, he didn’t seem too optimistic about it.
That said, Pelissero believes Carroll phrased his comments in a way that didn’t diminish the weight of his departure.
“To me, Pete walked a very fine line,” Pelissero said. “I thought it was the most noble and sincere farewell to a truly noble and sincere person.
But I didn’t take it as Pete Carroll saying goodbye to coaching.
The NFL level would almost certainly favor Carroll, but one has to wonder if he could return to the college ranks.
Finally, the Washington Huskies are looking for a new coach after Kalen DeBoer left for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Given that Carroll already won a national championship at USC, he could be a starter for the Huskies without having to move.
While it may seem like a long shot, and it probably is, it’s certainly an intriguing possibility that many would like to see.
If Carroll is truly there as a coach, he will certainly have left a legacy to be proud of at all levels of the game.
