Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni of NBC Universal, Inc. addressed the media on Tuesday just after reducing the roster to 53 players. Regarding the recent signing of Isaiah Rodgers, who broke the NFL’s gambling ban, the general manager of the Eagles was questioned.
While Howie Roseman is still in the process of assembling the Eagles’ 2023 roster, it appears that he has already begun work on their 2024 roster.
Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who was suspended by the NFL for at least the 2023 season on June 29 for breaking the gambling policy, was signed by the Eagles on Monday. Minutes thereafter, the Colts released him.
Rodgers was placed on the Reserve Suspended list by the Eagles right away. He won’t be compensated and won’t be around the squad for the upcoming season. He does not apply to the 53-man roster and will not be included against the Eagles’ modified 2023 salary cap amount of roughly $234.7 million.
The Colts selected Aaron Rodgers in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he inked a four-year, $3.44 million contract. This year, he was expected to earn $2.7 million.
Rodgers played in 45 games over his three seasons with the Colts, making 10 starts. In 2021, he had three interceptions; in the previous year, he recovered four fumbles. In 2020, he also got a rookie touchdown on a 101-yard kickoff return.
With an 82.1 Pro Football Focus score, Rodgers tied for fifth place out of 82 cornerbacks who saw at least 250 snaps in the previous season. His run defence grade of 75.5 was 20th best, and his coverage grade of 81.5 was sixth best.
Before Driscoll transferred to Auburn, 25-year-old Rodgers was a teammate of current Eagles offensive tackle Jack Driscoll during his time as a collegiate football player at UMass in 2016 and 2017.
Shortly after the accusations were made public, Rodgers sent out a tweet apologising for his actions.
“In response to the recent reports, I would like to fully own up to my mistakes. I acknowledge my faults and am prepared to go above and above to make things right. Being a distraction to my coaches, teammates, or the Colts organisation was the last thing I ever wanted to do.
“I’ve disappointed folks that I hold dear. I will put forth a lot of effort to ensure that this process corrects the faults I made in my judgement. I have never taken playing in the NFL lightly; it is an honour. I truly apologise to all of us.
Rodgers is primarily a peripheral player. In his three years with Indianapolis, he played 948 defensive snaps; just 31, of those snaps, according to PFF, were in the slot.
As of this past summer, starting corners Darius Slay and James Bradberry both signed three-year contracts, adding to the Eagles’ already congested projected cornerback room in 2024. Both agreements expire in 2025.
Additionally, promising rookie Eli Ricks is signed through 2025 with the Eagles holding his rights through 2026 if he makes the roster, Josh Jobe is signed through 2024 with the Eagles holding his rights through 2025, and slot corner Avonte Maddix is signed through 2024. Kelee Ringo is signed through 2026 on his four-year rookie deal. Zech McPhearson is contracted through 2024 as well, although he is sidelined for the entire season due to an Achilles injury.
