In the midst of their squad rebuild for next season, Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly extended the contract of one of their defenders.
Amakhosi kicked off their squad revamp this week, returning to Naturena on Monday with new technical staff members present.
The club reportedly parted ways with Keagan Dolly, Sfiso Hlanti and Siyethemba Sithebe who would see their contracts expire at the end of this month.
The defender Njabulo Ngcobo is also set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this week having signed with Sekhukhune United on a free transfer.
As previously reported, Chiefs might also not exercise their option to sign Jasond Gonzalez permanently with the striker having spent the last season on loan at the Soweto giants. The Colombian forward, Gonzalez couldn’t impress in 13 matches he played.
Amakhosi recently exercised the one-year option on George Matlou’s contract, keeping the midfielder at the club after for another season.
Following suit with George Matlou, Amakhosi have also activated the one-year option on Edmilson Dove’s contract, as his previous deal was set to expire at the end of June, as per FARPost.
Chiefs withdrew Dove from the Mozambique national team squad for COSAFA Cup which roared to life on Wednesday.
Despite being expected to start against Bafana Bafana, the Mozambique FA released a statement just two hours before kickoff. The statement revealed that the versatile defender, Edmilson Dove, would no longer participate in the competition due to a recall by his club, Chiefs, who summoned him back to Naturena.
It’s understood that Amakhosi want the entire squad present for the full pre-season due to the arrival of the new technical team. This will allow the new staff to assess all the players effectively.
The club also wanted to discuss the future with Dove who will now be at the club until June 2025.
Meanwhile, the Phefeni Glamour Boys have yet to make a decision on the future of their long-serving member Itumeleng Khune, who has been at the club for over 25 years.
He is now the only player whose future remains uncertain with his contract also expiring this week. However, it appears Khune came back for pre-season, hinting a possible renewal of his contract.
Chiefs legendary goalkeeper, Khune arrived at the club at the club at young age in 1999. The man hailing from Ventersdorp, in the North West, was promoted to the senior team at the start of the 2004/05 season.
Last season marked his record-breaking 20th season with the senior team.
