LAFAYETTE, La. (KADN) — We all knew with the departure of Louisiana softball head coach Gerry Glasco that some of the ladies would leave as well. Over the weekend, several players entered the transfer portal.
All the players that have entered the portal started for the Cajuns.
The biggest name to leave so far is Mihyia Davis, the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year.
“NIL and the portal is a little different animal today,” said Bryan Maggard, vice president of athletics. “You know, we experienced this when we lost Billy Napier as a head coach here. That was the first year the portal was in place. As people remember, we lost quite a bit of student-athletes.”
Over the weekend, five softball players announced that they are entering the transfer portal. They are Victoria Valdez, Chloe Riasetto, Brooke Elstad, Lauren Alred, and Mihyia Davis.
“On the other side of that coin, you have also kept some pieces: Maddie Hayden, Alexa Lanliers, Sam Roe, Lexi Delbrey, Laney Kreuder. You have some key people saying they are not going to go anywhere,” explained Maggard.
The Ragin’ Cajun vice president of athletics believes in the team’s future.
“Our goal is to minimize that this time around with our softball student-athletes. If we can get them to stick together, then we know we are going to have an unbelievably talented team this season,” added Maggard.
“Just because they enter the transfer portal doesn’t mean that they are leaving,” said Matt Miguez with ESPN Southwest Louisiana. “They are just keeping their options open. I think that any person would agree with that, and you can’t blame the players for wanting to keep their options open while they find a new coach here at UL.”
The university is currently focused on the search for Glasco’s replacement.
