Pep Guardiola has several players from other countries who would be deemed at the level to play for Gareth Southgate’s side

Manchester City had 14 players represent them at Euro 2024 — out of whom Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic’s Croatia side were officially knocked out of the tournament on Tuesday night.

Names like Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Nathan Ake and Jeremy Doku are players who would undoubtedly get into England’s squad.

Despite England having one of the best squads in world football — every team has a weakness in at least one department of the pitch.

Whether that weakness is down to a lack of world-class quality, depth or the unsuitable profile of player in relation to the manager’s demands.

The Three Lions are no different — as they have a lack of experience amongst their centre-backs in tournament football and apart from Luke Shaw, they lack a top-quality left-back as well.

When quizzed about which Spanish players could get into the England starting XI, one of the two players Carlos Alcaraz named was Rodri.

The 21-year-old told BBC Sport: “Rodri. Rodri, yeah.”

“Rodri, [Alvaro] Morata as well, for example. Those two, I am happy with those two.”

Declan Rice has been England’s mainstay at the base of midfield for a number of years.

But several pundits believe Rodri is a superior player to Rice, with Cesc Fabregas opting for the former over the latter as the better holding midfielder.
