Officially, Novak Djokovic will aim to win the illusive gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.The 24-time Grand Slam singles champion will compete for Serbia in his fifth Olympics, the Serbian Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday.
The renowned tennis player, 37, is recuperating nicely from recent surgery on his right knee.Due to a meniscus tear he suffered during his match against Francisco Cerundolo, Djokovic had to withdraw from the French Open quarterfinals, raising doubts about his ability to compete in the Olympics.
Djokovic chose to withdraw in order to have surgery, but he still prevailed in a tough five sets.Djokovic’s relationship with the Olympics is rich and varied.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he made his debut and took home a bronze medal.Nevertheless, he lost in the bronze medal matches at the Olympics in London in 2012 and Tokyo in 2021, missing out on medals.
Despite having a stellar career that included 24 Grand Slam victories, seven World Tour Finals, and a Davis Cup victory, Djokovic’s trophy cabinet is still lacking an Olympic gold medal.Duan Lajovi, a fellow Serbian athlete who also made it to the Games based on his ATP ranking, will be joining Djokovic.
Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, Djokovic’s longtime rivals, are also scheduled to compete for Spain and Great Britain, respectively, so the match promises to be a major spectacle.
