LANCASTER, Pa. – Megan Schofill concluded her run at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship on Sunday at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Auburn standout carded a 72-hole score of 292 (+12) to finish the event tied with Asterisk Talley and Catherine Park for lowest amateurs in the field and in a tie for 44th place on the leaderboard.
“This week, the golf course was definitely one of the hardest that I’ve ever played,” Schofill said after the tournament. “It just tested every part of your game: chipping, putting, driving, irons and mental. This is my first U.S. Open and it lived up to the expectations of the USGA making it a hard track. It was a great experience and a good learning experience for me to just learn what I need to work on in my game and what’s good in my game.
“It was great to be able to make the cut and play on the weekend to see what those nerves are like, what changes in the golf course and what changes in the mindset. Overall it was a great experience, a great week and I’m really happy to tie low amateur honors. Looking forward to building from this week.”Schofill began the major championship with an even-par 70 that featured four birdies on Thursday. She made the turn at 2-under during round one after hitting an approach to within five feet that led to a birdie on No. 9.
In Friday’s second round, Schofill started strong after sinking a birdie putt of just inside 20 feet on the par-3 12th hole, which was her third hole of the day. She ended the round 1-over for a 36-hole score of 141 (+1). Through two rounds, the five-time All-SEC selection was tied for fifth place.
Schofill was one of four amateur players to make the 36-hole cut after Friday’s round and became the first former Auburn player to do so since Candace Schepperle at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania.
