In a stunning move that has rocked both the rugby league and football worlds, Nathan Cleary, long-time captain of the Penrith Panthers, has officially resigned from the NRL club and terminated his playing contract to pursue a cross-code career with English Premier League side Hull City.

Cleary, 26, who has been the face of the Panthers’ success over the last decade — including multiple NRL premierships and representative honours — confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement released early Friday morning.

“After deep reflection with my family and support team, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from rugby league and chase a long-held ambition to play football at the highest level,” Cleary said. “This isn’t just a career change — it’s a lifelong dream. I leave Penrith grateful for every moment, every teammate and every supporter who has believed in me.”

Cleary’s transition from rugby league to professional football marks one of the most unexpected sporting developments in recent memory. Hull City, which competes in the English Premier League, confirmed that Cleary has signed a multi-year contract pending international clearance. Club chairman John Whittaker said, “Nathan is an extraordinary athlete with world-class leadership qualities. We are thrilled to add him to our squad and confident he will adapt — and inspire — on the football field.”

The Panthers, who have enjoyed sustained success with Cleary at the helm, now face a significant leadership void. Assistant coach Laura Mitchell told reporters, “Nathan has been more than a captain — he’s been the heartbeat of this club. We respect his decision and wish him all the best, but we’re ready to regroup, support our squad and move forward together.”

Speculation has already begun around potential successors, with several senior players tipped for leadership roles in the 2026 NRL season. Analysts are calling the move “unprecedented.” Very few elite athletes have successfully switched between professional contact sports and top-flight football, and Cleary’s decision raises questions about training, positional development, and international eligibility.

Whether he’ll feature regularly for Hull City remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the sporting world will be watching closely
