The Georgia football program is set to start Spring practice this week. This is always an important time of year for teams to get a better idea of the outlook of the roster for the upcoming season and an early look at some of the incoming freshmen. The Bulldogs will be doing all of that while also getting a look at the list of transfer portal acquisitions they brought in this off-season. They added several new faces at various positions, but none more than the wide receiver group.
Georgia lost two starting wide receivers after the 2023 season to the NFL as Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint both declared. They also lost quite a few names to the transfer portal, which led head coach Kirby Smart and his staff to go searching in the transfer portal. Georgia landed three new wide receivers to add to the roster: Michael Jackson III from USC, London Humphreys from Vanderbilt and Colbie Young from Miami.
On top of that, Georgia was also charged with the task of hiring a new wide receivers coach after Bryan McClendon elected to take a position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That then led Smart to hire former Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley away from South Carolina to fill the void.
This year’s spring practice will be an important time for the transfers to get a barring of their new environment and for coach Coley to weave his way back into the program, but most importantly, the Bulldogs will hopefully leave the spring with answers at the position.
Georgia is returning some key contributors from last season. Dillon Bell made a strong surge at the tail end of last season and quickly became a playmaker at a multitude of positions for his team. Dominic Lovett, a transfer from the 2023 offseason, also played a massive role on offense last season, but outside of those two names, the Bulldogs don’t have much-returning production from a season ago.
Rara Thomas, another transfer from the season prior, showed some flashes of what he could turn into throughout the 2023 season. Rising sophomore Anthony Evans did the same as he made a name for himself during postseason play last year for the Bulldogs. Finding consistent production out of both Thomas and Evans would be a pleasant site for the Bulldogs coaching staff this spring.
