Prior to the NHL trade deadline on Friday, the Montreal Canadiens sold goaltender Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils for a conditional third-round draft selectionAllen could be selected in the second round of the 2025 draft if he plays in 40 or more games for New Jersey the following year.

With 21 starts this season, Allen has a record of 6-12-3, a 3.65 goals-against average, and an.892 save percentage.

The rare three-goalie lineup in Montreal is ended with the trade, since netminders Allen, Sam Montembeault, and Cayden Primeau were in the NHL for the majority of the season.

The 33-year-old Allen has a contract that pays US$3.85 million a year through the next season. Half of Allen’s pay will remain with the Canadiens.

In 2020, Allen, who had won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, was traded to Montreal. In exchange for Allen and a seventh-round pick, the Canadiens transferred a third- and a seventh-round draft pick to St. Louis.

In 127 games over four seasons, Allen recorded 41 victories and a.899 save percentage for a Montreal team that was rebuilding.

After playing 289 games over seven seasons with the Blues, who selected him in the second round (34th overall) of the 2008 NHL draft, the six-foot-two product from Fredericton is now a member of his third NHL franchise.

As of right now, the Canadiens are in second place in the Atlantic Division.
