Is it possible for the Boston Red Sox to sign the best starting pitcher available as a free agent?
This offseason, Boston has work to do. Despite making significant progress in 2023, the Red Sox were unable to qualify for the postseason in the end. Even though the team was still in the running for a playoff spot far into the summer, the starting rotation is probably the main factor in why it was not successful.
In each of the previous two seasons, the Red Sox had only won 78 games. Boston’s bullpen was strained as a result of its starters’ inability to play through the whole game. With Craig Breslow as their new chief baseball officer, the Red Sox have plenty of cash to spend.
Although Breslow’s exact plans for the future are unknown, it is obvious that the Red Sox need to make additions this offseason. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Orix Buffaloes sensation, is without a doubt the most fascinating free agency starter this summer.
After been recently posted, Yamamoto is now able to discuss potential deals with Major League Baseball clubs. The Red Sox have been connected to him multiple times over the past year, and he is expected to sign a big free agent deal. Though his final destination remains unknown, Red Sox Nation may be pleased with the most recent rumors.
Joel Wolfe, the agent for the 25-year-old, recently discussed Yamamoto’s free agent strategy with Yahoo Japan. He said that Boston would benefit from Yamamoto’s willingness to play alongside other Japanese players, though he did not elaborate. After playing together in the past, Yamamoto already has a friendship with Boston outfielder Masataka Yoshida. Although Boston will still need to make the best contract offer, Red Sox supporters may be encouraged by this development.
