“Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Chur hospital, Gino couldn’t make it through this, his final and biggest challenge, and at 11:30am we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team,” Bahrain Victorious stated.
On Thursday’s stage five descent towards the finish line, Mader, 26, went into a ravine.
“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Bahrain Victorious stated in a statement.
After being airlifted to Chur hospital on Thursday from the crash scene, where he was given CPR and given resuscitation by medical personnel, Mader “couldn’t make it through this, his final and biggest challenge,” according to Bahrain Victorious, “despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff.”
Milan Erzen, managing director of Bahrain Victorious, continued, saying, “We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mader.” His skill, commitment, and excitement served as an example to all of us. He was not only a fantastic rider but also a wonderful person off the bike.
“His family and loved ones have our sincere condolences, and our thoughts are with them during this trying time. Bahrain Victorious will compete in his honour, honouring his legacy on all of the racetracks.
“We are determined to show the spirit and passion Gino displayed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.”
Mader finished fifth overall in the 2021 Vuelta a Espana after winning a stage of the Giro d’Italia. At Paris-Nice earlier this year, he finished fifth.
“Gino was a valued member of our team and the cycling community at large. He was an incredible athlete and a shining example of perseverance. His skill, commitment, and love for the game have motivated all of us.
“We respectfully request that Gino’s family’s request for privacy be honoured as they grieve their loss. We would like to thank the entire cycling community for their tremendous support, on behalf of the team and family.
We will miss you as a rider and as a person, Gino. Thank you for the laughter, happiness, and light you gave us all.
“Today and every day, we ride for you, Gino.”
