Andrew Van Ginkel has stated that he is hoping for the same outcome as he did at this time last year, and he is about to find himself in the same situation.
After re-signing on a one-year contract last offseason, the Miami Dolphins linebacker is set to become an unrestricted free agency with the opening of the new league year on March 13.
Since joining the Dolphins as a fifth-round selection in the 2019 NFL draft, Van Ginkel has performed admirably. However, after playing a major role at outside linebacker last season when Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips were sidelined by injuries, he may be even more essential now.
While playing for $2.65 million in 2023, he proved to be a significant value, and one would assume his price tag would be noticeably higher this next season.
Van Ginkel stated on The Joe Rose Show on South Florida radio station WQAM that it would be his choice to stay with the Dolphins, but his ability to obtain a contract on the open market may ultimately determine whether or not he returns.
“If everything works out, I love it here, our family loves it here and spent the past five years and I’d love to be a Miami Dolphins for a long time,” Van Ginkel stated. “But at the end of the day, it’s a business and if it doesn’t work out and we’ve got to go our separate ways …. but that’s the goal (to stay in Miami).”
Similar to Chubb and Phillips, Van Ginkel suffered a foot injury in the Week 18 loss to the Buffalo Bills and had to spend the rest of the season on injured reserve.
When asked about his health, Van Ginkel replied he felt fine but he wouldn’t elaborate.
