FEB 8 ‘I’M NOT THE GM’ Why is Mike McCarthy still the coach of the Dallas Cowboys? It may be a question that fans are still asking after a third-straight 12-win season ended with an early playoff exit. It was also a question recently posed to the Cowboys’ all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith:

“Because I’m not the GM,” Smith said Thursday, according to Andrew Perloff.

In other words, Emmitt isn’t exactly endorsing McCarthy’s retention.Rumors of Bill Belichick’s firing in New England persisted, and in the immediate wake of the Cowboys’ humiliating loss to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wildcard game, it appeared as though team owner Jerry Jones would break up with McCarthy.

But when the two met, Jones thought it would be best to bring McCarthy back to Dallas for his fifth and possibly last season because his contract expires the following year.

FEB. 7 ANOTHER APPETIZER By setting up an interview with New York Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel, the Cowboys have expanded their pool of potential defensive coordinator candidates.

Thursday is Marquand’s interview date, as first reported by ESPN.

The Cowboys’ choices to take Dan Quinn’s place after he left to becomeTyler expected out on January 7. The Cowvoys had hoped to do this, but it is now “expected” that Tyler Smith, a left guard, will not play at the Commanders this afternoon due to a plantar fascia tear.

From Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan, comes this letter.

That implies that while Smith prepares to make a comeback for the postseason, TJ Bass will start at left guard in the Week 18 regular-season finale.
