Alabama’s Kevin Steele, the former defensive coordinator at Auburn, is expected to retire.

Chris Low of ESPN has reported that Kevin Steele, the defensive coordinator for Alabama, will be retiring.

The 66-year-old Steele coached for almost 44 years, spending three of those years in Tuscaloosa under Nick Saban. In addition, Steele oversaw defences at Miami, Auburn, and LSU.

1981 saw Steele, a native of Dillon, South Carolina, graduate from Tennessee. After retiring from the game, he joined the Volunteers as an assistant coach and eventually rose to the position of outside linebackers coach.

In 2007, Steele was a member of Nick Saban’s initial staff at the Tide.

Prior to departing for a three-year stay at Clemson, he played for UA for two seasons. In 2014, Steele came back to Alabama as the linebackers coach after serving as director of player personnel.

Steele’s longest tenure was from 2016 to 20 when he oversaw Auburn’s defence, serving as interim head coach during Gus Malhzan’s firing.

In February of last year, Steele rejoined Saban’s team, bringing stability. Prior to the national championship game, Alabama’s defence scored 16th in the country.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, Dallas Turner, and the rising Terrion Arnold, Chris Braswell, and Justin Eboigbe are projected to be several NFL draft picks.

Players and Saban humorously acknowledged Steele for stepping up, even though doctors had instructed Saban to tone down his yelling during the season.

However, in contrast to the inexperienced Tommy Rees, his halftime tweaks, which resulted in game-changing turns, and his ability to work within Saban’s system made him a seamless addition to the booth.

Additionally, Steele avoided trouble when Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said UA secondary Travaris Robinson was now calling plays.

Once more he declined, pointing out that Saban, who is well-known for his defensive prowess, is the team’s real coordinator.

“Kevin did an excellent job. Because he is inside the box, he has an excellent understanding of what went wrong and what has to be fixed.

Regarding Steele during the previous season, Saban stated, “What’s not working, what might work better.”

Alabama is now going to have to hire a new defensive coordinator in as many years. This is the first season that a defensive coordinator has only lasted one for Saban.

Freddie Roach, who has coached the defensive line since 2020, and Robinson, who is regarded as a superb recruiter and has vast SEC experience (Florida, Auburn, South Carolina), are examples of internal prospects.

After spending a year at Colorado, Charles Kelly is now Auburn’s co-defensive coordinator.

Kelly worked as the safeties coach and associate defensive coordinator for Tuscaloosa from 2019 to 22.
